Platform Statement: Part I
1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? Advisors and Administrators who have had the opportunity to connect with NACADA attest to the value this engagement adds to their own professional development and the advancement of our profession. Region Chairs are well positioned to create these opportunities for engagement, reaching out to current and prospective members to grow the Association in ways that are representative of those it serves. Region 8 is experiencing a time of positive growth and engagement despite the challenges presented by prohibitive institutional budgets and our geographical size. As Region Chair, I would like to maintain that momentum while increasing our connection to Advisors and Administrators at two-year institutions and tribal colleges, both of which are underrepresented in our current membership.
Platform Statement: Part II
2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? In 2013, I served as Co-Chair of the Region 8 Conference in Anchorage, Alaska. This was the first time a NACADA event was held in Alaska and there were concerns about geographical limitations preventing participation. Since the financial health of the Region often hinges on a successful conference, it was crucial to run a budget-conscious conference that could attract enough attendees to be viable. We set a conservative budget and a goal of 175 attendees. Through the efforts of a large conference planning committee, composed primarily of individuals new to NACADA, we were proud to register 283 attendees and close the conference with a balanced budget. Recognition of, and support for, the profession of Academic Advising was boosted significantly across the Alaska University System as a result of this event.
Platform Statement: Part III
3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? I was introduced to NACADA while still a graduate student, and have been an active member for ten years. Involvement with the Association has provided me with mentorship and role models, opportunities to serve and lead, and information and resources that enhance my work. I believe in the importance of this organization, and the positive impact it has on the profession and its members. Region 8 has been advanced by the service of outstanding Region Chairs, and I would like to give back to the organization and our Region by continuing in their footsteps.
