Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association?
Advising Undecided and Exploratory students contributes significantly to retention and persistence.  CUES members can increase this knowledge across disciplines with literature and conference presentations.  We read, we research, we make improvements.  But we by and large do not publish or present.  It is my goal to see CUES membership improve understanding of our goals by increasing the amount of literature we produce concerning the Undecided and Exploratory student.

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader?
Locally, I am a charter member of the Committee on Academic Advising and Retention (CAAR), and serve on the Professional Development subcommittee.  I am proud of Texas Tech's commitment to assisting and supporting the undecided and exploratory student through major fairs, Discovery! programs, and communication.  Our department's constant improvement of our Discovery! process, based on research and best practices, continues to reach students in new and innovative ways.  I believe, as a leader, my most significant contribution is to allow our office to try new ideas, develop innovative communications, and accept that not every idea will work the way we would like.  We learn from mistakes as well as we do from successes.

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
My role at Texas Tech has continued to include more leadership roles, in the office and across campus.  My hope is that a leadership role with NACADA will continue to expand my philosophies while bringing new ideas and new approaches to NACADA in general and CUES in specific.

Past Involvement in NACADA

4. Outline your past involvement in NACADA:
     a. Years in NACADA
     b. National Offices Help and Accomplishments Achieved
     c. Regional Activities/Offices Held, including accomplishments achieved in office
     d. Etc.

I have been a member of NACADA since 2010, when I joined academic advising at Texas Tech.  I have presented once on military veterans (National,2013)  and once (Region 7, 2014) on self-efficacy in advising programs. In addition to Undecided and Exploratory students, I am involved with probation and suspension students and believe there is a natural union between the two populations.
