Platform Statement: Part I
1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association?
1. Fostering Awareness and Involvement
When I consider what I know of the association, and when I consider PLASTIDS (the only way I can remember NACADA's strategic priorities without writing them down), the most important goal at this moment seems to be 'fostering awareness and involvement.'
I believe that most members like the idea of involvement, but realistically have very little margins in their busy professional and personal lives. Still, we each have much to contribute and the profession has much to gain from the contributions of each active member. The professional relationships I've built since joining NACADA in 2006 have grown from good networking into strong friendships that I value. So, finding ways to provide members with 'manageable but significant' opportunities is the most important goal.
Specifically, I'd advocate for three things:
a. Grow a formal, structured, mentoring program that is open to all interested parties.

b. Use known experts and national resources to create sponsored seed projects that provide guided research and publication opportunities for grassroots advisors.

2. Affordable and Access-able Resources.
My institution currently only has 37 paying members of NACADA. This isn't because we only have 37 academic advisors; it is because financial resources are constrained. Making membership, events, and resources more available and affordable for the grassroots advisor is what will make a difference for them, and for the Association as a whole.
Platform Statement: Part II
2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader?
Locally, my supervisors have chosen to invest heavily in academic advising, and by focusing on advisor professional development, technology tools, and campus collaborations, my own 'Campus Advising Liaison' role is one way they're doing that. I'm fortunate to have this role on my campus, and I'm proud of the work we're doing to encourage advisor excellence through a whole variety of initiatives.
Within NACADA, I'm proud of involving an increasing number of people in the commission that I chair (CUES). There are a number of ways I've provided leadership to catalyze this involvement:
1. Most recognizable, I started giving away #iTakeForks at our recent annual conference. Fun, meaningful, and spreading!
2. I led the creation new monthly opportunities for commission member involvement through a) leadership as a Steering Committee Member, b) leadership through a new CUES awards group, and c) collaborative meetings to discuss research possibilities across geographies.

3. To better understand and serve the CUES membership, I led an analysis on application details from our commission's 1,493 members.
4. To identify gaps and areas of strength related to CUES issues, I conducted an analysis of past national conference presentations by school, presenter, and year.
These accomplishments demonstrate vision, creativity, commitment, and the self-awareness to realize that I can't accomplish any of these big goals on my own. For success, drum majors need a highly-invested band ... if you can't get people to follow, you're just high-stepping with a silly hat. The better alternative is music AND a show.
Platform Statement: Part III
3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
At this year's annual conference, Laura Pasquini, a leader I respect and whose work I appreciate, and Julie Larsen, who is quickly rising to fill Laura's prodigious shoes, approached me at the recent Annual Conference and said, "So what now, Barron? Why don't you become a Board member?" I thought, "Hmmm ... what do they do? Would I be good at that? Do I have more to give?"
After further investigation into the responsibilities of the position, I began thinking it might be a good fit. When I asked my supervisors about it, one said, "Joshua, you'd make a great Board Member." When he says, "Go," I know I'm ready and equipped (and supported) to run ... and run well.
So, my curiosity has been confirmed into interest by the combination of this external encouragement and my own desire to continue investing in work that makes everything work better. I honestly believe this opportunity will give me a chance to serve by doing something for a profession and an organization that I really...
