Platform Statement: Part I
1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association?
My commitment to the vision, mission and goals of NACADA has been strengthened by my opportunities for involvement within the association. I would like to be able to give back to the regional division to help formulate and provide guidance as we adjust and strengthen the current regional governance structure. A review of processes and participation in this structure are key to providing accurate communication within the association. Forward movement with the strategic plan and review of our processes can assist the division in determining both its strengths and opportunities within the scope of the association.
With the release of the new mission and goals, I believe that it is important to help each region identify, through the strategic planning process that was utilized during the annual conference meeting, the areas of focus that are most important to them.

I believe I can contribute to development of enhanced student learning through academic advising through assessment and the provision of information across our members and beyond. The importance of advising as teaching is paramount to the nature of accountability and assessment of academic advising and its importance throughout higher education.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader?
It is hard to select between professional development programming and the reward and recognition process as I am proud of both. I am proud of the reward and recognition processes that I have been involved with starting on my campus in 1998 and within my region in 2005. On my campus, I have been able to propose and have accepted the Edmund Shearer Faculty Advisor of the Year (peer nominated) and the Navigator Award (student nominated). The Edmund Shearer Faculty Advisor program feeds our college, university and NACADA awards. We have presented 54 college awards, 15 university awards and received 12 NACADA Awards. The Navigator Award has had 16 recipients.
Within our region, we awarded our first recipients in 2005 and continue to award in the categories of primary role, faculty role, advising administrator and graduate student scholarship. We have awarded 29 recipients through 2013.

This accomplishment demonstrates that at both the institutional and regional level I am able to bring individuals to the table and share with them the need and importance of reward and recognition programs to academic advisors. At our campus, I was able to get the funding for the awards program that provides a monetary stipend to the award winners and if they receive a national award complete funding to cover all expenses to attend the awards ceremony at the annual conference and remain for the entire conference.
My leadership skills reflect on my strengths which include command, achiever, woo, strategic and communication. I can take the lead to draw attention to an issue. I can achieve the goal that is set and work with those instrumental in its success. I have the ability to win others over through strategic planning and open communication. I learn from the past to accomplish in the future.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
When I was nominated for this position, I had to reflect on experiences to determine if I would be a good fit for this role. Through this, I have determined that my commitment to the vision and mission of NACADA has been strengthened by my opportunities for involvement within the association. I would like to be able to give back to the regional division to help formulate and provide guidance as we adjust and strengthen the current regional governance structure. A review of processes and participation in this structure are key to providing accurate communication within the association. My experiences as a region chair and a region steering committee from the unveiling of the NACADA Strategic Plan in 2003 to the new plan unveiled in 2013 can only be an asset to leading and communicating within the regional division. NACADA’s system of guided participatory management gives power and responsibilities to each of the divisions. Strategic initiatives can only be strengthened by input and representation of all viewpoints. NACADA has made a strong commitment to its strategic planning process. Improving the leadership communication processes and assisting the regional chairs in their need to be heard moves the division forward as it continues to focus on improving the processes while recognizing the need for new ideas and different improvement targets unique to each region.
