Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association?
As the Research Chair, I would champion evidence-based practice through scholarship. To meet the needs of the on-going professionalization of advising, I believe it is critical to develop our members into scholar advisors who can integrate research into everyday advising practices. By fostering competencies in scholarship, we can expand our current knowledge base, document outcomes, and ultimately, increase our effectiveness with students. I hope to expand the number of members who conduct research in the association.

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader?
I recently created a fully online summer registration program for international and transfer students. I developed and piloted the registration program to meet the needs of our college and these student populations. As a result of our success, I conducted on-going professional development for advisors on our campus at the request of the Provost’s Office. In addition to our campus recognition, I received the Advising Technology Innovation Certificate of Merit 2012.
This project required significant collaboration between our college and the new student programs office, international student and scholar services, and many academic units. I spearheaded this project for the office to create project outlines and deliverables, gather stakeholder feedback and information, and presented a high quality program on-time. I believe my abilities to strategically plan, foster collaboration, and lead successful initiatives will benefit me and the standing committee members well.

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
I am interested in the Research Chair position in order to make scholarship more accessible to fellow members of NACADA. I want to help advisors gain access to our research base in order to make informed decisions on their campuses, establish and exceed student outcomes, and make scholarship a normative practice in advising offices. I hope to help bridge the gap between researchers and advisors in order to foster partnerships to better understand ourselves and our students. I want to continue the committee’s traditions of professional development, scholarship dissemination, and celebration of our work.
