Platform Statement: Part I
1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? From my perspective and as a result of the expanding role of academic advising as a profession, I will work to make sure that professional development opportunities we consider and dream up are reflective of the core skills and competencies of academic advisors, but that we are also paying attention to the ever-evolving relationship of our work with retention, progression, and completion. In addition, I am concerned with advancing the scholarship of academic advising by encouraging and supporting the role of academic advisors to participate (without reference to hierarchy) in presentations, publications, and additional possibilities that refine and further leadership within the role of the advising professional. Finally, I am deeply interested in the ways that advisors, faculty, and administrators might organize collectively to enhance student success.

In addition, I have created an academic advising professional development award program in which 1 academic advisor per each of the 11 colleges is selected to attend the annual conference each year. Through this attendance, the advisor and his/her respective advising director negotiate a plan for attending sessions that will advance the advising center in a particular way. For example, the advisor and director may decide to focus on sophomore mentoring programs. As a result, the selected advisor is required to attend related NACADA presentations. Once the advisor returns to campus, a plan is created for implementing what was learned from NACADA in the specific advising center. I support these individual college plans with a $2500 award. From my perspective, this promotes professional development that...
