Platform Statement: Part I
1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association?
NACADA’s strategic goals are so important, and if elected to this position, I would use these goals as a road map to ensure that members are provided with the top-notch professional development opportunities they deserve from the Association. I believe increasing the visibility of NACADA throughout the world and further strengthening our connection with our global partners will allow NACADA to continue to foster an inclusive environment and to develop and sustain effective leadership within the Association. I would actively listen to any concerns NACADA members may have, and bring those concerns to the table to ensure that the Association continues to meet the needs of every member. Assessing whether or not the Association meets these goals is an ongoing process, and one that I believe must continue, as well as NACADA’s commitment to promoting and increasing diversity both within the general membership and the leadership of the Association. Finally, promoting and communicating the scholarship of academic advising and its positive effect on student success to university decision makers is paramount, and being able to take part in the dissemination of this knowledge would be an absolute honor.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader?
This last year, I was honored to serve the members of The University of Texas at Austin’s Academic Counselors Association as their President. In that role, I was elected to represent university advisors and student affairs professionals to higher administration, sitting on several committees that have been tasked by our Provost and President to increase four-year graduation rates and student success. Having this opportunity was truly an amazing experience. I was fortunate to be able to be a conduit for the concerns and needs of advisors on this campus to the higher administration of the university, while bringing an advisor’s perspective to the discussions related to graduation rates and student success. I feel that this role provided me with such an amazing leadership opportunity and my interactions with these higher administrators afforded me an opportunity to understand even further how this institution works, and the struggles such a large university faces. Being the representative of academic advising to university decision makers was truly an awesome job, and one that I am so thankful for, as it showed that I can be that representative, that I can understand the issues institutions face on a daily basis both from the viewpoint of an academic advisor and the higher administration.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? NACADA is a community, a family, and part of my motivation to run is the opportunity to give back to an organization that has given me so much. In the ten years I have been a member, I have been given the opportunity to take part in amazing conference sessions and discussions. I have learned so much from simply talking to NACADA members from all over, and know that I am a better Advisor for it.
I remember how afraid I was when I was asked to Co-chair the New Advising Professionals Interest Group so many years ago. I had just joined NACADA, and knew little about what an Interest Group was let alone how to be a Co-chair of one, but the assistance, encouragement, and support I was given in making that happen has never left my memory. Working together with other NACADA members and the Executive Office has been a great learning experience, and I look forward to continuing my education.
