Platform Statement: Part I
1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association?
It has been a privilege for me to work at a small private institution as the associate director of academic advising since 2007. During my time in this position, I have had the pleasure of being a NACADA member. As an active member, I have learned a great deal about advising administration, advising assessment, and general advising leadership from my NACADA experiences. These experiences have helped me grow and develop into a seasoned practicing advisor and administrator. With the current challenges in higher education, organizations such as NACADA are in an ideal position to cement the role of effective academic advising in student success to college and university decision makers.
Often NACADA members from small colleges and universities are the sole representatives from their institution and I would like to create more opportunities for connectedness in order to share best practices. Often NACADA members from small colleges and universities are the sole representatives from their institution and I would like to create more opportunities for connectedness in order to share best practices. One of the strategic goals of the association is to pursue innovative technology resources to support the association. At the National Conference in Salt Lake City, a few small college and university members discussed ways to further utilize technology. Additionally, I received my doctorate in 2010 and have taught graduate courses in adult learning and career development. I would like to contribute my experiences to champion the educational role of academic advising while aligning with the strategic goals of expanding the scholarship of academic advising.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader?
In September of 2008, an ad hoc committee of faculty members at Calvin was formed to discuss the role of academic advising on campus. A cross-divisional group of faculty members accepted the invitation and began meeting with the Registrar and me to discuss components of advising from the first-year student orientation program to senior advising. After two years of brainstorming, we formalized the committee in order to add depth to the advising program by presenting the committee for approval by faculty senate. It is now a governance committee.
The mandate of the committee is to serve the college in all matters concerning academic advising by initiating and recommending policy regarding advising to the administration and the faculty. Since advising is such an integral component of a student’s success in college, the importance of faculty engagement in the process cannot be undervalued in the college’s retention efforts. This example demonstrates my leadership skills because it highlights...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? The chair of the small college and university committee really interests me because I feel that I am now at a point in my career where I can give back to NACADA. I have always appreciated the opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues in Region 5 and across the country. This position would allow me to continue to broaden that scope of collaboration. From co-chairing a MIACADA (state-allied organization) Conference to facilitating a conference session, I have learned so much about academic advising and the NACADA Association. I believe now is the ideal time to further share what I have experienced and learn more as well.
