Platform Statement: Part I
1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association?
The NACADA history of being a volunteer organization committed to fostering a community of advisor who have students and their best interest as the center of their universe is one of the reasons I became involved and continue to work within the organization. Moving forward I believe that it is important that Region 2 continue to outreach to Instructional Faculty who have advising as a secondary (but equally important) function. Finding new ways to engage their participation and engagement in the advising process continues to needed. Along with faculty I believe that the organization needs to continue to outreach to current graduate students. They bring a continuing flow of energy and current pedagogy to NACADA and we provide our future advisors with the not only NACADA values but how they are connected to the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) standards for Academic Advising.

I am also committed to the regions tradition of excellence in research, in an academic environment of "value added funding," research that shows outcomes will enhance the visibility and viability of what we practice as advisors. I believe that NACADA provides the opportunities and venues for new and seasoned advisors to work together, and learn from each other. The research symposiums held during regional conferences gives individual advisor the opportunity to vet their topic and research while getting constructive input.
I also see the Region as a place to creating an environment that promotes state to state collaboration: with increased legislative mandates I believe that states can work together and learn from each other in facing the challenges of these mandates. Rather than attempting to “reinvent the wheel”, reach out to colleagues and see what has worked for other institutions.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader?
During an 11 year tenure as Department Chair of the Counseling Department (which is also responsible for advising), I was able to promote greater involvement in NACADA by Instructional Faculty, as well as advocate for the necessary technology to improve the services we provided: the most relevant being helping to set the groundwork for the new intake system that was implemented on October 1, 2013. I think that this shows my ability as a leader to listen to the needs of my area and advocate wherever necessary to get the tools we need to provide quality services to our students. I think pushing issues that need to be addressed is my greatest leadership strength.
However, I think that one of my greatest accomplishments within my institution that has had an impact on NACADA is the being able to expose Community College students to our organization. 3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? I have been serving for the last four years as the representative for the advisors in Maryland on the Region 2 Steering Committee and I believe that this region is vibrant and passionate about our role in the success of students: as state legislators impose more regulations for students I think that it is important that there be a voice providing a realistic vision of our profession and the value added for students by their advisors. Region 2 has been a leader in research and I want to be a part of continuing in this area and developing more links to NACADA with Community Colleges in the region. I was influenced to run for this position by the belief that I have ideas and energy to offer to the advisors in this region. During my time with NACADA I have been mentored by and have had the opportunity to mentor, this position allows me to expand that mentorship.
