Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association?
The next few years are a pivotal time for the High Achieving Students Commission.   Since the establishment of the Commission, it has been very successful in supporting and sponsoring high quality sessions for the National NACADA Conference.  Now is an excellent time to build on that success and expand the commission to reach an even larger number of participants.  If elected to this position, I will lead a strategic effort to establish an even greater network in the High Achieving Students realm by increasing participation in the Commission nation-wide.  I would also undertake an effort to generate more connections during the time in between National conferences. We could  encourage even greater High Achieving students efforts at the regional level. We could also leverage available technology to create a blog, to share relevant articles from the field through the use of a twitter hashtag, and to establish regular google hangouts (informal web chats) on specific topics throughout the year....

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader?

In 2011, I established the College of Engineering Honors Program at the University of Michigan.  While our Literature, Science & the Arts Honors Programs was established over 50 years ago, a similar program for our highest achieving engineering students had not existed. The program now enrolls over 150 students and we will be graduating our first students next December.  The program was designed with both a technical depth and educational breadth and leadership aspect to the curriculum, in order to better reflect the demands that are placed on engineers in the 21st century.
In addition to our Honors population, we also have a much wider array of high achieving students. Over the past several years, I have championed an effort to bring Appreciative Advising practices to our advising across the College of Engineering (including 15 different engineering degree programs).  I believe that this effort creates consistency in our advising practices. I also believe that the “don’t settle”...

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
I can contribute to the High Achieving Students Commission through my technological skills and also strategic planning experience.   The next few years represent an important time in establishing a sense of community among the Commission participants. I think I can make a difference and bring further value to the participants through increased connections and interaction among this community.
