Platform Statement: Part I
1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? As a female with an ethnically diverse background (a Latina who was born in Mexico, raised in Kansas), I have had the misfortune of knowing what an exclusive environment feels like, this is one of the many reasons why I love NACADA, we truly are family, and I feel included. Aligned with NACADA's strategic goals, because of my experiences; I will be creating an inclusive environment within our committee; I will attempt to create professional development opportunities that can help the advisors who are afraid of doing assessment and I hope to work closely with the research committee to expand and communicate the scholarship of assessment in academic advising.
Platform Statement: Part II
2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? The two most proud accomplishments are; Emerging Leader and Summer Institute Faculty.
As an Emerging Leader, Class of 2012-2014, I met my second year goals during my first year! My accomplishments demonstrate my eagerness to learn, my perseverance to become a better advisor and inspire others. I have become a sponge for all NACADA has to offer and am excited to share my enthusiasm with others.
One of my Emerging Leaders goals I met my first year was; bieng invited to join the Summer Institute Faculty. Dr. Rich Robbins mentored me and gave me the extra push of confidence, "si se puede, yes I can". I had the opportunity to present on Research in Advising and Assessment in Advising. I asked Dr. Robbins if I could do both the sessions and received positive feedback from the participants and the other faculty members. This experience demonstrated my ability to successfully present on assessment and my commitment to continue to grow as a professional in NACADA.
Platform Statement: Part III
3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? I am interested in serving in this position because I have a passion for Assessment in Academic Advising. Assessment was a difficult, even more so, a scary word for me to hear at my first NACADA Summer Institute. I remember recording all of the presenters and reading/reviewing the material, I was especially eager to learn about assessment. I was determined to overcome my fear of assessment, especially since I had to return and explain it to the Advising team. The key thing was to stop being afraid of it and make it fun. Dr. Rich Robbins did just that, he made assessment so fun; I left the institute loving assessment. I returned to KSU and shared my knowledge and enthusiasm for assessment with my colleagues! We were able to promote our roles of effective academic advisors. This is one of the many experiences with assessment that have influenced my decision to run for this position.
Past Involvement in NACADA
4. Outline your past involvement in NACADA:
a. Years in NACADA
b. National Offices Help and Accomplishments Achieved
c. Regional Activities/Offices Held, including accomplishments achieved in office
d. Etc.
I was first introduced to NACADA while working at Kansas State University as an Academic Advisor in the College of Education. The advising center was undergoing some changes and I was sent to the 2009 Summer Institute to learn about assessment. I was so impressed with the organization; I became a member in 2010. After I graduated in 2010 from Kansas State, I accepted a position as an Academic Advisor at The United States Air Force Academy. While here, I was honored to have been selected as an Emerging Leader. Having been in the program only a year, I was able to accomplish my goals; I have presented at the National Conference, attended another Summer Institute and furthermore, was selected as a Summer Institute Faculty mentee to present on Assessment, and I have 3 years as a board member for the Summer Institute. Most recently, I have been invited to join the Committee for Sustainable NACADA Leadership.
