Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association?
The distribution of financial resources plays a critical role in furthering the vision and mission of the NACADA international organization.  As Finance Committee Chair, it will be critical to garner the current state of affairs across the entire association.  Furthermore in this role, I would work collaboratively with the leadership to seek creative and efficient solutions to help us realize our goals of expanding scholarship of academic advising, promoting diversity, and supporting innovative technology in advising while sustaining focus on professional development and advising for student success.  
Investigating new tools, resources and staffing will be a primary focus for consideration and creating opportunities to assess the cost effectiveness of these potential new investments will help to frame the decision-making process for the utilization of resources deemed necessary.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader?
As the first Dean of Academic Advising at Bristol Community College, my role has been to create sustainable systems of effective academic advising that meet the needs of students and expectations of faculty and professional advising staff.  Having had ten directors over the last twelve years at the institution, stability in leadership is critical, as well as having a leader who is knowledgeable about current best practice in the field of academic advising.  In my first year, and with the support of faculty and administration, we have instituted a proactive and structured First Year Advising Program with five required points of contact over the first year.  Data demonstrated that more new students registered during the priority advising registration period and faculty shared that many students were better prepared for their individual advising sessions.  With positive outcomes in the first year, faculty and advisors have been forthcoming with supporting the new program and interested in...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
The opportunity to serve as the Chair of the Finance Committee will allow me to use my strengths in understanding fiscal affairs and connecting the decisions of resource allocation to the greater purpose the association.  As a firm believer in the importance of academic advising, I have a passion for seeing the organization flourish in such a way that it continues to support those faculty and professionals seeking development in new and innovative ways.  This type of support for the important work they do ultimately results in improved student success in higher education.  As the world’s economy continues to demand a more educated workforce, efforts that support student success, like the work of NACADA, become that much more critical.  NACADA truly contributes to shaping the world.

d. Highlights: Integrated a Social Media Technology extended pre-conference program with our Region One Conference and assisted in launching an UnConference program within the Region One Conference, Maintained positive fiscal performance during 2006-2010 as Budget Manager.
