Session #: 113(LEC)
Title: Advising Native American Students
Lead Presenter: Vanessa DeCardenas
Date: October 06, 2026    Time: 9:15 am - 10:10 am
Room: Oklahoma Station 5 - Omni
Abstract: Through NACADA's Core Values of Caring, Commitment, Empowerment, Inclusivity, Integrity, Professionalism, and Respect, I will offer 7 complimentary ways in which Academic Advisors can do a better job of not only advising Native American students, but supporting, encouraging, empowering, and advocating for them in ways that are relevant and valuable to their experience of being a Native American student. I will use theory, frameworks, and pedagogy which come from the field of American Indian studies, like The Peoplehood Matrix, and apply that to NACADA advising philosophies and guiding principles like the Core Values. I believe that NACADA's Core Values can be understood and practiced in a way that is similar to the structure and purpose of Indigenous created frameworks for understanding the world and its people.
