Abstract:
|
Academic advising leaders are increasingly responsible for driving institutional transformation while managing staff morale, addressing resistance, and balancing shifting priorities. Ron Carucci's 'The Emotional Strength You Need to Lead Through Change' describes the internal 'inner battle' leaders face-tension between the agency required to act and the ambivalence that emerges when outcomes feel uncertain. This session applies Carucci's framework to advising administration, highlighting how emotional tension can become a leadership asset rather than a liability. Participants will examine advising specific sources of leadership strain and explore five tensions that leaders must learn to 'hold' rather than resolve during change. The session introduces practices that protect judgment, stamina, and resilience. Attendees will leave with a one-page Emotional Strength Change Plan tailored to an active advising initiative, equipping them to guide change with clarity, steadiness, and compassion. |
