Abstract:
|
Academic advising is inherently relational, yet many advisors are trained primarily in policy rather than the emotional competencies that foster trust and persistence. Emotional intelligence (EI), the ability to recognize, regulate, and respond effectively to emotions, strengthens the NACADA Core Competencies, particularly relational skills that drive meaningful advising interactions. This interactive session connects EI theory to advising practice through the use of case studies, reflection, and skill-building. Participants will examine high and low EI responses and practice strategies for challenging conversations, such as low GPA or major changes. Attendees will leave with practical tools to enhance empathy, communication, and student-centered advising. |
