Abstract:
|
Students often approach advising spaces with anxiety, viewing them as places of requirement rather than belonging. This session explores how the physical advising environment can function as a pedagogical and relational tool within holistic advising practice. Grounded in student development theory and concepts of belonging, psychological safety, and advising-as-teaching, the presentation examines how space design can reduce fear, increase approachability, and encourage engagement. Using a practice-based example, the session highlights low-cost changes to an advising suite, including space redesign, informal programming, and an integrated virtual presence, and discusses observed outcomes such as increased student presence, informal interactions, and expanded access to support for students who might not otherwise seek advising. Participants will reflect on how their own advising environments communicate values and will leave with practical strategies for creating welcoming, student-centered advising spaces across institutional contexts. |
