Abstract:
|
This presentation explores how feminist leadership can emerge within academic advising, especially in environments where openly identifying as a feminist may feel taboo. Drawing on personal experience advising at a large and politically conservative institution, this session reflects on how everyday acts of care can become forms of resistance. Creating a welcoming office space, making room for emotion, affirming student identities, and honoring individual stories are practices that challenge institutional norms that often prioritize efficiency over humanity. Using frameworks from bell hooks' 'Teaching to Transgress,' the presentation considers how advisors navigate the tension between professional boundaries, legislative restrictions, and the desire to advocate meaningfully for students. Participants will gain insight into the risks and rewards of feminist micro-activism in advising, along with practical strategies for cultivating small acts of resistance in their own daily work. |
