Abstract:
|
Retention conversations often center on student motivation, commitment, and persistence. Yet underserved students frequently disengage not because they lack intention, but because institutional support is not visible, accessible, or timely. This session reframes student engagement through the lens of availability rather than commitment, arguing that students do not need to demonstrate long-term institutional 'marriage' to receive meaningful support.
Aligned with NACADA Core Values and informed by Engagement Theory, Self-Determination Theory, Proactive Advising, and Holistic Advising frameworks, this presentation positions advising as a structural equity intervention. Participants will examine how system design, resource accessibility, and proactive outreach influence persistence. Attendees will leave with practical strategies to increase visibility and usability of support services and design practices that strengthen equitable retention outcomes. |
