Abstract:
|
High advisor turnover continues to challenge institutions, placing added pressure on those who remain and diminishing the quality of student support. This session reframes advisor success as a matter of cognitive alignment and identifies five cognitive traits that consistently predict long-'term effectiveness: communication, problem-'solving, leadership/coaching, empathy, and academic knowledge. Participants will explore how these traits reduce cognitive load, strengthen confidence, and improve advisor satisfaction. The session offers practical strategies for refining hiring language, designing interview questions that reveal cognitive strengths, and implementing low-'cost, high-'impact supports that sustain advisors once hired. Through brief case examples and actionable tools, attendees will learn how to hire for cognitive fit and create environments that protect and enhance these strengths. When institutions align roles and support with how advisors think, retention becomes a natural outcome. |
