Abstract:
|
Academic advising is a profession defined by connection, yet that connection unfolds across generations. While students remain chronologically young, advisors evolve through experience, shifting identities, and changing cultural reference points. This session explores the "generational middle space" of advising, where emerging student expectations meet enduring institutional realities, and where immediacy intersects with reflection. Drawing from generational research and developmental theory, including Schlossberg's transition framework and concepts of identity development and self-authorship, participants will examine how advisors grow from near peers into mentors and cultural interpreters. Rather than viewing generational distance as a barrier, the session reframes experience as depth and continuity that strengthens trust and belonging. Attendees will engage in guided reflection and leave with practical strategies-such as reflective storytelling, reverse mentoring, and cultural translation-to sustain empathy, relevance, and relational energy across generations. |
