Abstract:
|
Students often struggle not because they lack ability, but because institutional processes overload their cognitive capacity and obscure the hidden curriculum. This session introduces a unique, theory-informed approach that applies cognitive load theory and learning design principles to academic advising. Participants will analyze real advising materials, identify hidden curriculum barriers, and practice redesign strategies that improve clarity, equity, and student understanding. Through guided discussion and collaborative activities, attendees will learn how to reduce unnecessary complexity, make expectations explicit, and create student-centered pathways that support diverse learners. Advisors, faculty, and administrators will leave with practical tools they can immediately apply to simplify communication, strengthen belonging, and enhance advising effectiveness. |
