Abstract:
|
"Don't make a mountain out of a molehill"
When peak advising periods approach, students flock to their advisors in seek of assistance. Yet, each student perceives their individual concerns as urgent, and often seek immediate assistance during peak periods. During such demanding days, advisors are often left asking ourselves, "How do we balance the needs of a student population when everything is 'urgent'?"
Categorizing issues of high urgency are considered "mountains" and issues of lower urgency are "molehills", while recognizing the timeliness of the resolution for each concern is crucial to our understanding of how to balance such urgent cases. In this interactive presentation, advisors will explore what "mountains" and "molehills" look like at their institutions, discuss the role of the student perspective in understanding students' perception of urgent requests, and discover ways to approach peak advising periods that alleviate the mental load of advisors. |
