Abstract:
|
Black students frequently report high levels of dissatisfaction with academic advising. To address this gap, advisors must understand the sociological and psychological barriers these students face. This session introduces W.E.B. Du Bois's theory of double consciousness and his metaphor of the Veil to illuminate the unique challenges of the Black collegiate experience. Participants will explore practical strategies, including humanized and proactive advising, designed to foster psychic liberation and mitigate the Black tax. Through lecture and group discussion, attendees will learn to transform advising from a clerical task into a vital link for retention and student success. |
