Abstract:
|
'Am I Enough?' Storytelling as a Culturally Grounded Practice for First-Gen Success. For first-generation and culturally marginalized students, this question often lies at the heart of their academic journey. This session explores how counter-storytelling serves as a radical, equity-centered advising practice that moves students from survival to possibility. Grounded in Narrative Advising and Relational-Cultural Theory, three first-generation advisors share counterstories that challenge dominant institutional narratives of success. Through a blend of personal narrative and interactive story circles, participants learn to identify moments of dissonance and use them as bridges to student belonging. Attendees will engage in guided reflection and leave with a concrete narrative advising worksheet designed to help students connect personal heritage to academic purpose. This session provides a transferable framework for transformative, culturally grounded advising across various institutional settings. |
