Abstract:
|
At predominantly white institutions, first-generation, low-income (FGLI), and students of color are frequently subjected to deficit framing-depicted as 'lucky' or 'resilient' rather than naturally capable. These narratives risk reducing students to their trauma and reinforcing the myth that their admission is an exception rather than earned. This interactive workshop champions a counter-narrative centering student dignity, agency, and talent. We will critically examine how institutions inadvertently exploit student hardships for fundraising and institutional gain. Most importantly, participants will collaborate on actionable strategies for advisors and faculty to shift their language and policies toward asset-based practices. By foregrounding student excellence, we can move beyond 'inclusion' as a buzzword and empower students to reclaim their own stories. Attendees will leave with a toolkit for fostering authentic, dignifying environments. |
