Abstract:
|
This session showcases a centrally coordinated, semester-long first-year advisor training cycle designed to 'meet in the middle,' connecting people, purpose, and possibility within a decentralized advising model. Grounded in NACADA's Core Competencies, the training begins with foundational skills and progresses to applied learning, reflection, and skill development throughout the first semester. What sets this model apart is its blended synchronous and asynchronous design, which provides flexibility and accessibility for colleges with varying time and capacity, and its use of pre- and post-tests to measure advisor growth and preparedness. Participants will examine examples of in-person sessions, asynchronous modules, and supplemental resources that ensure accessibility, consistency, and engagement across decentralized units. Interactive discussions will guide attendees in identifying strategies to adapt centralized training approaches to their own contexts. Formative assessment practices, including pre/post tests, reflection activities, and facilitated discussions, will be shared. Attendees will leave with practical, scalable strategies to strengthen connection, confidence, and purpose-driven growth among first-year advisors. |
