Abstract:
|
Academic encouragement is a critical yet understudied component of supporting BIPOC college students' success. This session presents new psychometric evidence for the Academic Encouragement Scale (AES) using data from 553 BIPOC students in the United States. Findings support the AES's two-factor structure, measurement invariance across race and gender, strong correlations with hope, belonging, and academic self-efficacy, and excellent internal consistency. Notably, potential-focused encouragement showed especially strong links to student success. Session attendees will learn how academic advisors, faculty, and institutional leaders can integrate evidence-'based encouragement practices into advising conversations, course design, and campus-wide initiatives. Practical strategies will be shared to help educators affirm students' strengths, foster belonging, and build supportive learning environments. This session is designed for professionals seeking actionable tools to advance equity and student success through relational advising. |
