Abstract:
|
In this session, I examine how social media platforms, particularly TikTok, shape the college decision-making processes and expectations of first-year community college students before they ever meet with an academic advisor. Drawing from dissertation research that includes survey data and student interviews, I explore how students encounter advising narratives, institutional stigma, and conflicting information online and how these experiences influence trust, anxiety, and advising conversations. I focus on the implications for academic advisors working with first-generation, adult, and other nontraditional student populations who may rely heavily on peer-generated digital content. Participants will gain insight into common social media-driven assumptions students bring into advising sessions and learn equity-minded strategies for addressing misinformation without dismissing student experiences. This session emphasizes practical approaches to supporting student meaning-making, informed decision-making, and goal setting within a digitally influenced advising landscape. |
