Meeting in the Middle: Lessons Learned from a Merger of Academic Advising & Career Services
Career services offices are experiencing declining and inequitable student engagement, even as prospective students and families increasingly prioritize career outcomes when choosing institutions. Concurrently, academic advising units face staff burnout, turnover, and growing accountability for retention and graduation metrics, all within tightening resource environments. Rather than addressing these pressures independently, one institution responded by meeting in the middle and functionally merging academic advising and career services into a unified Academic & Career Success Center.
This presentation examines the strategic drivers and structural and operational considerations involved in a merger. Participants will explore the goals of integration, risks, implementation strategies, and assessment of the center. Early milestones and measurable outcomes will be discussed to illustrate both challenges and early wins. |
