Abstract:
|
Undergraduate faculty mentoring (UFM) benefits in achieving undergraduate academic performance and development. However, the causal effect and relationship between UFM and research experience outcomes are poorly understood, especially in comprehensive Chinese research universities. This research adopts Astin's I-E-O theory and House's social support theory to understand the influence of UFM on undergraduate research self-efficacy. Using a three-times longitudinal design and a first-difference model, this study investigates the causal effect of UFM on research self-efficacy. Results reveal significant positive effects of faculty mentoring on research self-efficacy, particularly in terms of research support. The first-difference model addressed the 37% upward bias of the OLS model. The impact varies by gender and discipline, with females experiencing more potent effects and STEM fields showing weaker ones. Implications for institutional policy and advising practice through equity are discussed. |
