Abstract:
|
Gilmore Girls, known for its quick dialogue and rich analogies, provides an engaging lens for strengthening reflective listening in a collegiate setting. This session presents a practical framework for using analogies to validate students' experiences, deepen reflection, and guide collaborative problem solving. Research in cognitive science shows that analogical reasoning is a central higher-order thinking skill, helping individuals interpret new situations by connecting them to familiar experiences (Parsons & Davies, 2022). Additional studies reveal that people often use analogies to navigate uncertainty and enhance problem solving, an experience that mirrors many coaching conversations (Chan, Paletz, & Schunn, 2012). Using examples from Gilmore Girls, presenters will demonstrate the ''Reflective Listening with Analogical Expressions'' framework and facilitate guided practice. Participants will leave with applicable strategies to strengthen rapport and support student decision-'making. |
