Abstract:
|
Communicating may be the single most important dimension of academic advising-and yet it is often the most overlooked. This session explores practical, research-informed strategies for building rapport, strengthening relationships, and communicating with clarity in today's technology-saturated environment. From email overload to generational communication gaps, advisers face increasing competition for students' attention. How, then, do we make meaningful connections-especially with rosters exceeding 300 students?
Drawing on survey results from Liberal Arts students and advisers at a four-year university, this presentation examines how students prefer to communicate and what practices foster trust and engagement. We will reflect on intentional outreach as tools for success. Participants will leave with adaptable strategies to enhance information sharing, cultivate trust, and create advising relationships that support students from first contact to graduation. |
