Abstract:
|
Students entering high-'demand, high-'structure programs such as Nursing often encounter a "hidden curriculum" long before they begin coursework. Unwritten expectations-sequencing traps, admissions nuances, professional norms, communication expectations, and the logic behind prerequisite design-shape student success in ways many do not anticipate. Because students often don't know what they don't know, advisors frequently find themselves translating institutional complexity in real time.
This poster demonstrates how uncovering and explicitly teaching the hidden curriculum can strengthen equity, belonging, and student confidence, especially for first-'generation, multilingual, and nontraditional learners. Drawing from advising practice in a competitive health-'care pathway, it highlights visual tools, communication strategies, and redesigned materials that reduce cognitive load and clarify program structure. Attendees will leave with practical strategies for identifying hidden curriculum, communicating expectations transparently, and supporting students who may otherwise feel overwhelmed or disconnected. |
