Abstract:
|
This presentation examines how college students make meaning, form identity, and navigate decision making through Marcia Baxter Magolda's Self Authorship theory. Today's students enter higher education amid constant external influences-social media, family expectations, and societal pressures-that shape how they define truth and understand themselves. Many arrive aware that major life decisions lie ahead, yet lack the internal grounding needed to approach those decisions with confidence. This session explores the three phases of Self Authorship-External Meaning Making, the Crossroads, and Self Authorship-and demonstrates how each affects students' development. Through interactive reflective exercises, participants will learn strategies to help students recognize external pressures, navigate internal-external tension, and strengthen their own decision making frameworks. Attendees will leave with practical tools to support students in shifting from dependence on authority to confidence rooted in personal values. |
