Abstract:
|
Higher education institutions are facing multiple challenges: the demographic cliff, economic and political instability, shifting job markets, AI, widespread budgetary cuts, high advisor turnover and burnout, and increased mental health challenges for students. This presentation will use research on change management, resiliency, and high impact practices for student engagement to provide guidelines for how to help advising teams to thrive-and not just survive.
Transformational leadership models work well with change management, and are thus, the cornerstone. To help advising teams understand the whys and to generate creative solutions, supervisors need to build trust, model openness, and use job crafting to support innovative ideas and flexible attitudes. Additionally, this approach of trust and job crafting also builds upon and enhances a key trait of resiliency: community-building. To build stronger community, supervisors can use visual metaphors as a starting point of opening dialogue, with the overarching goal of helping advisors identify and embrace their own creative strengths, including desire to help students. |
