Abstract:

From Silos to Shared Responsibility: Embedding Advising Where Students Learn
Silos don't retain students, relationships do. Our cross-college team transitioned from a faculty-only advising model to a hybrid system that embeds professional advisors within academic spaces and integrates faculty and staff roles across business and engineering. As student needs grow more complex, advising must move beyond isolated ownership. This embedded approach supports online and on-ground students, first-year and transfer populations, and key recruitment-to-retention transitions. Participants will explore how locating advisors where students learn increases visibility, strengthens early engagement, and reframes retention as shared institutional responsibility. Through case examples and guided mapping activities, attendees will examine how cross-functional structures align outreach to transition points and create sustainable, connection-centered advising ecosystems. |
