Abstract:
|
Academic advising is often structured around policies, requirements, and course sequencing. While necessary, this approach can unintentionally limit advising to transactional exchanges. This session introduces narrative theory as a relational framework that repositions advising as a co-constructive process centered on identity, agency, and preferred futures. Drawing from narrative scholarship and advising practice, we explore how students' educational decisions are part of evolving personal storylines shaped by lived experience and institutional context. Participants will examine how narrative-informed questioning deepens strengths-based and appreciative advising approaches and will learn practical strategies for integrating story-eliciting questions into in-person and virtual advising contexts. Through conceptual framing and applied examples, this session offers advisors tools to move beyond degree planning toward meaningful, student-centered conversations that foster clarity, ownership, and direction. |
