Abstract:
|
Just like Smokey in the classic film 'Friday,' many do not appreciate the context of how we got to where we are today. As academic advising celebrates meaningful anniversaries in the coming years, lost histories of higher education merit closer examination. The 'old stuff' isn't just what you have to wade through to get to more important things; it can actually help you figure out what to do next. But despite many important confluences and parallels, a review of the literature shows very little work has been done to meaningfully connect historical perspectives with the scholarship and practice of academic advising or to consider how they may offer insights into possible futures. As academic advising continues to diversify and grow, the stories and voices of all involved in the field deserve to be heard. |
