Abstract:
|
Students strive for a sense of belonging on their campus. This desire is contextualized within exacerbated mental health concerns and experiences of isolation during years of secondary school remote learning. What does it mean to matter on a college campus? And in an advising context? Using Shaun Harper's Anti-Deficit Achievement Framework, advisors will learn the power they have in fostering belonging in their students and on their campus. Through centering student achievement and disrupting deficit thinking, advisors will learn anti-deficit advising practices to apply at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, office-level, and systemic-level. Presenters will share improved student and office outcomes upon adopting an anti-deficit approach to advising, and workshop case studies where participants can apply these approaches. |
