Abstract:
|
If you've ever said, 'I should stop eating lunch at my desk', or 'My students should know how to...,' or 'My coworker should really...' You might have a case of 'The Shoulds.'
This session takes a humorous, research-based look at the psychology of 'shoulding' on ourselves and others, including our students.
Drawing from cognitive-behavioral theory and motivational interviewing, we'll explore how words like 'should' turn into guilt, burnout, and unrealistic expectations that quietly shape our advising practice, the agency of our advisees, and even our self worth.
Participants will learn to recognize and reframe should statements into language that encourages curiosity, compassion, and growth. If you're tired of 'shoulding' on yourself or being 'should' upon, join us!
Attendees can expect laughter, discussion, relatable examples, and practical strategies to replace pressure with possibility, and obligations with alternatives. |
