Abstract:
|
What would it look like if our daily advising practices fully reflected what research tells us works-and how do we move from aspiration to action? The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) offers a comprehensive, research-informed framework for quality academic advising, including over 50 standards across key functional areas such as student learning and development, assessment, equity and access, collaboration, and technology. Yet many advisors are unfamiliar with CAS or unsure how to apply it in daily practice.
This interactive pre-conference workshop introduces CAS as a practical framework for guiding advising practice, program improvement, and student success. Participants will engage in a structured two-hour experience that includes a foundational overview of CAS, guided reflection on current advising practices, and collaborative activities that translate standards into real advising behaviors. Timed segments include small-group application exercises, gallery-style analysis of CAS focus areas, and dedicated action planning.
Positioning CAS as a North Star for continuous improvement, we will emphasize shared language, equity-minded practice, and incremental change rather than compliance or perfection. Participants will explore how selected CAS standards align with NACADA's Conceptual, Informational, and Relational Core Competencies and identify where their practices meet, partially meet, or fall short.
Designed for advisors at all levels, this workshop offers practical entry points for new advisors and strategic application for experienced practitioners and administrators. Attendees will leave with clarity, practical strategies, and concrete, advisor-controlled steps to strengthen advising practice.
