Abstract:
|
Most of us are uncomfortable apologizing, especially if we don't feel responsible. However, an apology can be key to re-engaging a student who is feeling uncared for, unfairly treated, or disconnected. A transparent and sincere apology can be the first step to resolving the problem and helping a student feel heard and supported.
Techniques for delivering a good apology are typically not in advisor training programs. Delivering a good apology is an essential skill in the advisor's toolbox for de-escalating conflicts. This session will look at several models for developing an effective apology. We will also examine why some real examples of apologies in higher education missed the mark. Participants will use case studies to analyze and practice delivering effective apologies in advising settings. |
