Abstract:
|
Institutions often structure first-year advising and major advising as separate systems, unintentionally creating fragmentation in students' academic journeys. As students transition from First-Year Experience (FYE) programs into discipline-based advising, gaps in communication, philosophy, and student development can disrupt momentum and persistence. This session argues for an integrated advising model that conceptualizes student progression as one continuous developmental journey rather than two disconnected phases. Drawing upon NACADA's Concept of Academic Advising, developmental advising theory, and retention research, the presentation identifies structural, relational, and cultural barriers that impede seamless transitions. Participants will explore practical frameworks for shared advising philosophies, coordinated communication protocols, and data-informed handoffs that preserve relational continuity. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to reduce transition shock, strengthen advisor collaboration, and align advising structures to support student persistence, identity formation, and timely progression to degree completion. |
