Abstract:
|
Advisors are often masters of motivation-but we can also be masters of "should."
"I should have a 0-inbox before I leave today."
"I should have already figured this out by now."
This session explores the psychology behind "shoulding"-those sneaky, self-imposed (and often arbitrary) expectations that quietly shape our advising conversations, our stress levels, and our sense of professional worth. Drawing from cognitive-behavioral research, motivational interviewing, and real-world advising examples, participants will learn how to spot the "should" trap in themselves and their students, and how to replace it with more empowering, flexible thinking. With practical tools, honesty, and a little humor this session invites advisors to shift from "should" to "could," creating space for grace, growth, and options for themselves and their students. |
