Title: From First Year to Graduation: Leveraging Technology and Flipped Advising for Academic Planning
Lead Presenter: Julie Van
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: Academic advising is most impactful when students arrive prepared, engaged, and ready to author their own educational journey. Our advising team at a large R1 private university's College of Computer Sciences leveraged a flipped advising model, rooted in the appreciative advising philosophy, to shift preparation to students before the appointment, freeing advisors to focus on deeper engagement. Using Canvas LMS, the Degree Audit Reporting System, Microsoft Forms, Power Automate, Microsoft Lists, and Navigate, we built advising campaigns around two critical touchpoints: first-year long-term planning and third-year graduation plan confirmation. Attendees will examine the full advising campaign lifecycle, analyze the advisor and student experience at each stage, and develop a transferable framework for evaluating and adapting their own institutional tools to support a flipped advising practice.
