Abstract:
|
Many transfer students enter four-year institutions from two-year colleges where academic expectations, institutional systems, and available resources differ significantly. As a result, transfer students often prioritize graduating quickly and may rush through the transition process without fully engaging in campus life or utilizing available support services. This transition can lead to academic, personal, and social challenges that negatively impact their overall experience and success.
Non-traditional transfer students, particularly those balancing employment, caregiving responsibilities, other life commitments, face additional barriers to engagement and persistence. These students may be less likely to seek help or feel connected to the campus community, even when resources are readily available.
This session will explore the common obstacles transfer students encounter and highlight the critical role advisors play in supporting their transition. Participants will learn how intentional, student-centered advising approaches can positively influence transfer students' engagement, sense of belonging, and academic success. After the session, attendees will have a better understanding of transfer students' unique challenges and how to support students in ways that foster meaningful impact on their overall experience and outcomes. |
