Abstract:
|
When advisors vacate a position, whether temporarily, due to leave, or permanently, it creates a burden on the remaining team members and disrupts student support. Burnout among advisors can lead to further attrition and negatively impact the student's experience. Research highlights that feeling valued and supported is key to advisor retention. In response, our institution's central advising office developed the Advising Relief Program (ARP) to provide continuity of care during advisor absences across a decentralized structure of twelve colleges and over 270 advisors. This presentation outlines the development, implementation, and procedures of ARP, including the creation of the Academic Advising Specialist role. I will share challenges, successes, and outcomes, such as the emergence of a campus advising ambassador. Attendees will gain insights and recommendations for establishing similar programs to support advisors' well-being and student success. |
