Abstract:
|
This scholarly paper examines how first-generation Black male students at a two-year institution in the southeastern region of the United States interpret advising, mentorship, and transfer preparation through the lens of Community Cultural Wealth framework (Yosso, 2005). Drawing on narrative inquiry and Photovoice methodology, the study centers student meaning-making processes rather than solely institutional outcomes. Findings from semi-structured interviews and photovoice activities reveal that advising interactions function as interpretive sites where students assess relational safety, navigate institutional messaging, and make persistence decisions shaped by racialized contexts. The paper introduces the Story-Conscious Advising Framework (SCaF), which positions advising as narrative intervention work, through which students make meaning of institutional messages. This study contributes to equity-centered advising scholarship and offers implications for culturally responsive engagement in two-year and transfer contexts. |
