Abstract:
|
Academic advising is central to student success, yet reviewing advising models is often complex and emotionally charged. This session describes how Western Kentucky University used the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education self-assessment to conduct a comprehensive review of advising across colleges, structures, and roles. A provost-charged, campus-wide committee intentionally aligned selected CAS standards with institutional priorities, including mission, equity, student learning, leadership, resources, technology, and infrastructure. Emphasizing process over outcomes, presenters examine evidence identification, rating calibration, and tensions related to workload, advisor identity, and centralized versus decentralized models. The session candidly addresses resistance, trust-building, and balancing national standards with local context. Participants will learn how WKU "met in the middle" by connecting people, purpose, and possibility to produce actionable recommendations. Attendees will leave with strategies for committee design and role clarity aligned with NACADA values. |
