Abstract:
|
College and university students pursuing careers in professional healthcare fields (Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary, etc.) are sometimes overlooked when it comes to tailored advising and support. While many of these students are high-achieving and goal-driven, they frequently struggle with ever-evolving definitions of success, self-imposed pressures, and the highly competitive nature of professional program admissions. This session provides strategies for advising this unique population, offering insights based on over 35 years of experience as a former pre-med student, faculty member, and program director. Topics include GPA calculations, test preparation, major selection, healthcare experience, and myths about competitiveness. Attendees will gain tools to better guide students in becoming competitive applicants rather than just qualified candidates, with a focus on supportive and effective advising approaches and interventions that address their distinct needs and concerns. |
